How to get on a GC’s bid list as a subcontractor

Prequalification is a general contractor’s review of a subcontractor’s licensing, insurance, safety record, bonding, finances and experience before inviting them to bid or awarding work. It reduces the GC’s risk. Each GC uses its own forms, so having standard documents ready speeds the process.

The experience modification rate reflects a company’s workers’ compensation claims history compared with similar businesses. Many GCs and owners set EMR thresholds for subcontractors, especially on larger projects. A strong safety program and accurate records help keep the rate competitive and documented.

Not always, but many commercial, public and larger private projects require performance and payment bonds from key subcontractors. Having a relationship with a surety and a bonding letter ready widens the projects you can bid. Requirements vary by GC, owner and contract size.

Create a complete company profile listing your trades, service areas, certifications and contact details, and keep it current. Then complete prequalification with the GCs you want to work with and ask their estimators to add you. Respond promptly to invitations, even when declining, to stay on their lists.
